KakaoMap is the leading map and navigation app in South Korea, offering detailed domestic routing and location information for cars, public transport, walking, and cycling. It provides integrated navigation without needing a separate app and recommends local attractions and restaurants based on user data and big data analysis. Key features include real-time traffic updates, push notifications for public transit, a “Nearby” tab for local recommendations, and a “Theme Map” feature for exploring themed locations. It is available in English and Korean but uses Korean for many search results and directions, which can be a challenge for non-Korean speakers, even when the app is set to English.

Key Features

  • Comprehensive Navigation: Provides the fastest routes for cars, public transit, walking, and bicycles, using real-time traffic and updated information.
  • Integrated Navigation: Offers in-app navigation directly after a route search, eliminating the need for a separate app.
  • Local Discovery: Recommends restaurants, hot spots, and events based on current location and user data, available via the “Nearby” tab.
  • Public Transit Features: Delivers push notifications to guide users when to get on and off public transit, with accurate arrival times for buses and trains.
  • Theme Maps: Showcases locations based on specific themes, such as restaurants, hot spots, or events, providing a curated browsing experience.
  • Location Sharing: Allows users to share their real-time location and travel routes with KakaoTalk friends.
  • Big Data Analysis: Utilises big data to provide detailed insights into specific places, including demographic information like age, gender, and day of the week, according to KakaoTalk.

Considerations for Tourists

  • Language Barrier: While the app’s interface can be in English, many search results, place names, and directions remain in Korean, making it difficult for non-Korean speakers, notes Punch Digital Marketing.
  • Naver Map Comparison: For a more user-friendly experience in Korea, Naver Map is often recommended due to its more comprehensive English support, including station names and exit instructions for the subway.
